Trail of Istrian frescoes 1.0.0

Publisher Description

The Middle Ages are a long period that in different areas had a different duration. The preserved Istrian mural paintings were painted between the 9th and 16th cc. in the manner of the Middle Ages although this period chronologically surpasses its limits. The 16th c. finally set the borderline between Habsburg and Venetian territory in Istria. However, until then the political map of Istria remained rather varied. Besides Venice and Austria, this area was under the administration of the Aquileian Patriarchate, the Counts of Gorizia, the Devin family and other minor feudal lords who, apart from the said rulers, inherited land that was given as a fief by bishops of as many as five historic dioceses: Poreč, Pula, Trieste, Koper and Pićan. They were the main commissioners of works of art in the Middle Ages, besides the local community that commissioned works of art mainly through confraternities (“townspeople societies” and “unions” of the time). Their commissioners and authors are rarely known to us by name. The first to emerge from the medieval anonymity was Ognobenus from Treviso (Ognobenus Trivisanus) who painted St. Vincent’s Church in Svetvinčenat. About one hundred years later, we know of Albert from Constance, Vincent and Ivan from Kastav, Anthony from Padova, Klerigin from Koper, Blasius from Dubrovnik (Blaž Dubrovčanin), Dominic from Udine and Orlando from Venice. Their origins also add to the diversity of art production of the Istrian Middle Ages.
